What is Depression ?
Depression is a common mental health condition that affects millions worldwide. A recent study by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) states that around 15% of Singapore’s general population suffer from depression. Among young people (aged 15-35) , the prevalence rises significantly, with about 1 in 3 affected by depression, anxiety and/or stress.
While everyone experiences feelings of sadness or being down from time to time, depression goes beyond these normal mood fluctuations. Depression is characterised by deep sadness, persistent feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest and low energy. It significantly impacts our daily functioning, our relationships and our work as our minds are overwhelmed with negative thoughts and we lack motivation to do anything. Recognising the difference is crucial for seeking appropriate support and treatment.
Since depression impacts our motivation and energy levels, it can be difficult to break free and take action to improve your situation. That’s where we can help! With the right support, recovery from depression is achievable.
What Causes Depression?
Depression can run in families, meaning that due to hereditary factors or genetics, some people are simply born with a higher propensity for depression.
Depression can also be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain or hormonal changes around puberty, postpartum and menopause.
Significant life events or stressful experiences such as work-stress, relationships, school, loss, trauma, major illness can also trigger depression.
Depression is not a sign of weakness, nor can we simply 'snap out of it' .....
The Role of Psychoeducation and Building Hope

Learning about the biological, behavioural and emotional aspects of depression can bring about understanding and insight. With this knowledge, you’ll be equipped to develop practical strategies, take proactive steps and implement effective solutions to actively overcome your challenges and take back control.
